Date: - Jan 12, 2021

Wadi Al Helo Library, affiliated to the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), organised a dialogue session during which Her Excellency Kifah Al Zaabi, a lawyer and member of the Federal National Council, discussed the impact of family disintegration, and the issues of divorce on families, children and society.
At the beginning of the session, Al Zaabi introduced a number of reasons leading to the spread of divorce, and indicated the legislative measures related to it and its implications.

Al Zaabi stated that divorce is one of the most widespread issues in our societies and in many cases, it is the only solution to disputes. Al Zaabi indicated that we must look for the causes of conflict and ways to resolve them to reach family stability, as we must understand the important role of the family and its importance for building a stable society.

Al Zaabi continued by maintaining that the most prominent reason for divorce is the absence in the role of the family, which often does not interfere in the affairs of the married couple, and in providing advice on the duties and responsibilities arising from such relationship. In addition to the role of the media and social media in displaying incorrect lifestyles that negatively affect society and families.

Regarding the rights of the husband and wife, Al Zaabi, stressed that failure to adhere to rights and duties is a major reason in divorce cases, and today we find that women play various roles in the home separately from the husband, and this is a negative factor. It is imperative that there be complementarity in the roles between the two sides. In addition, the husband and wife should think positively, and look for good advice from authorised and experienced persons.

On the role of education and its impact on the marital relationship and divorce issues, Al Zaabi emphasised that marital culture is the most important criteria.

Al Zaabi added that many holders of higher degrees lack the understanding of family culture, which is the most important factor in the stability of the family.

On her opinion on curbing the phenomenon of divorce in societies, Al Zaabi highlighted the role of the family, because it is the basis for educating the married couple about the nature and reality of married life. In addition to its importance in paving the way for them to be a great family. It is also the responsibility of the parents not to establish the concept of divorce as a shame and forbidden, but viewing it as a last resort.

Al Zaabi continued that UAE has provided an ideal environment that guarantees the rights of the married couple and preserves the family. The directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, reflect concern for the family as a basic nucleus for building a stable society.

At the end of the session, Al Zaabi gave advice to parents not to encourage the married couple to divorce as an easy option to solve problems, and called for the need to search for better solutions to ensure the continuity of the marital relationship because of its great repercussions on the lives of individuals themselves and society in general.
