Sharjah Public Library (SPL), a Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) subsidiary, has announced week three activities featuring in the summer programme they have crafted to keep children occupied during their school break. The third week of July 21–25 in SPL Headquarter, will be dedicated to basic of robotics and computer programming taught in a series of workshops, themed around art, culture and environment.

‘Brain Storming Robotics’ is the first workshop, which will offer young participants a platform to explore the latest robot construction technologies, learn about robotics programming and how to build operating systems for robotics.

The second workshop, “Discover Electronics’, will introduce participants to the fascinating world of electronics, teaching them the fundamentals of electricity and how electronic devices and games are made. Children will also be taught how to integrate technology with crafts.

‘Virtual Reality Apps’ is another workshop on the list, and is designed to fuel children’s existing passion in VR technology. Through a customised and age-appropriate learning module, the workshop teach participants basic VR applications and how to add 3D models. Also included in a workshop is real-time VR experience in which children will wear state-of-art VR headsets and be taken through an exciting virtual world.

Sharjah Libraries was established as a private library in 1925, by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, under the name ‘Al Qasimiyah Library’. Its location has since changed several times, from Al Hisn Square under the Mudeef Building to Sharjah City Municipality, then to Africa Hall, to Sharjah Cultural Centre and Sharjah University City.

In May 2011, HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the new building of the library at the Cultural Palace Square, with the name, Sharjah Public Library. The new facility contains more than half a million books in multiple languages across numerous fields, including science, humanities, art and literature, with branches in Kalba, Wadi Al Helou, Dibba Al Hisn, Khorfakkan and Al Dhaid.
