Aesthetic Sensibilities
IT’S wonderful to see the Emirate of Sharjah emerging as the cultural capital of the Arab world. Sharjah invests a huge amount of money and effort at promoting Arabic language, art and cultural heritage (“Arabic calligraphy workshop explores aesthetic sensibilities,” September 28, The Gulf Today). Happily, the Sharjah Public Library, which is a subsidiary of Sharjah Book Authority, recently organised a workshop to promote Arabic calligraphy, its aesthetics and progress in history. There is no denying the fact that the Arabic script is famous for its beauty and elegant intricacies in the whole world. And Arabic calligraphy could be seen in a number of books and architectures. It’s remarkable to note that the workshop helped people appreciate the unique styles and characteristics of Arabic calligraphy reflected in innovative design, richvisual elements and ornamentation. Besides highlighting Arabic calligraphy’s aesthetic criteria underlined by special instruments harnessed to create unique forms of the alphabet, the event also shed light on the artistic element illustrated by its glamorous patterns and charming graphics. I appreciate Sharjah’s efforts at promoting the Arabic language, which is a major component of Arab world’s national identity, by popularising calligraphy. Sadaf Jamal By email .
