Date: - Aug 04, 2022

The Sharjah Public Library (SPL) has spotlighted its wide range of activities and programmes and the diversity of its knowledge sources provided through various channels to cultivate a culture of reading, during the 87th edition of the World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) held recently in Dublin, Ireland.

At the event organised by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), the Sharjah Public Library also led a series of discussion sessions to facilitate knowledge and expertise exchange. SPL’s ‘Talk of the Day’ sessions explored vital topics including issues related to copyrights, global and regional advocacy for libraries, and the development of sustainable services in the post-pandemic period.

The discussions also highlighted how library associations around the world support leadership development in the library and information sciences field and how countries and communities strengthen strategic leadership skills to develop a dynamic competitive environment. The sessions also discussed ways to extend support for new and emerging professionals to take up leadership roles and ensure libraries adhere to values of inclusivity and diversity.

SPL’s pavilion at WLIC consisted of three distinct parts. The first section was dedicated to meetings and discussions between members in the library sector. The second was dedicated to hosting international companies and institutions to discuss partnership opportunities, while the third one was dedicated to highlighting success stories in the industry as part of a promotional and awareness campaign to highlight the evolving role of libraries and librarians.

Video clips highlighting SPL’s activities and programmes throughout the year, and entries from participants for the promotional and awareness campaign were also screened at the third section of the SPL pavilion. As part of the awareness campaign, SPL further published the videos created by participants, on its social media accounts.

Commenting on SPL’s participation, Eman Bushulaibi, Director of SPL, said: “Our participation in the 87th edition of WLIC is aligned with Sharjah’s cultural and developmental project founded under the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to build bridges between cultures and peoples around the world through the medium of books and libraries.”

The SPL Director added: “SPL’s participation also stems from our strategy to forge and bolster relationships with our counterparts, be informed of the latest developments and best practices in the field, and exchange expertise, to advance our competitive capacities and creativity to serve our communities better.”
