Sharjah Libraries to launch SPLLF on Sept 30, Oct 1
Organised by Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL), an affiliate of SBA, the forum will bring together experts and academics specialising in the organisation and management of content in libraries, educational institutions, and cultural organisations. The theme for the next edition of the award will also be unveiled during the event.
The role of libraries in shaping awareness and identity
On the inaugural day, the forum will host several sessions dedicated to exploring the evolving role of public libraries as essential pillars in building sustainable communities that can adapt to contemporary challenges. Highlights include a keynote session titled ‘Information Institutions: From Traditional Roles to Shaping Awareness and Enhancing Identity,’ as well as sessions on ‘Public Libraries: A Meeting Place for Cultures and Diversity’ and ‘Public Libraries and Entrepreneurship.’
Essence of humanity and its finest expression
Commenting on the forum, Eman Bushlaibi, Director of SPL, said: "This year’s forum offers an excellent platform to explore the deep connection between libraries and creative fields such as cinema, television, theatre, visual arts, and music. These industries can only flourish in an environment enriched by knowledge and creativity. Books, as a vast repository of human thought and the highest form of intellectual and cultural expression, serve as the foundation for these industries, which not only provide entertainment but also drive social and cultural change.”
She continued: “Distinctive and influential artistic works that have shaped generations and led to significant societal transformations have drawn their primary inspiration from books, which remain the essential source of creative and intellectual content. Libraries play a crucial role in supporting these industries, and as much as they rely on the intellectual contributions of thinkers, writers, and scholars, they also reflect the level of awareness and knowledge within a society.”
Libraries and cultural challenges
The second day will focus on ‘Libraries and the Challenges of Cultural and Knowledge Work,’ ‘Public Libraries as Living Centres,’ and ‘Public Libraries: Empowering and Integrating Knowledge Roles to Build a Generation of Reading.’ These sessions will offer valuable insights into best practices that strengthen the relationship between public libraries and the communities they serve.
Celebrating excellence
The 24th edition of SPLLF promises a rich and diverse programme, including special sessions where award winners will present their contributions to the library field. The forum will conclude with a comprehensive report and recommendations to advance the library sector and amplify its cultural and societal impact.
Following the forum, SPL, in collaboration with the Emirates Library and Information Association, will host a specialised training programme designed to enhance the skills of library professionals. This programme will take place at the University of Sharjah and Khorfakkan University.
SPLLF is one of the most esteemed awards in the fields of library science, documentation, and information within the Arab world. It is founded on the principle that knowledge is the most effective pathway to achieving sustainable development and improving the well-being of individuals and communities.
